The heartbeat of our garden that is. Tomatoes are still growing and it is almost Thanksgiving.

The heartbeat of our garden that is. Tomatoes are still growing and it is almost Thanksgiving.

Today is the last day of Summer. We stopped by the garden as it has been a week since I have been there. The herbs are gorgeous, the Sunflowers are falling over into the Zinnias, the cucumber plants are dying and we are waiting for the Mums to bloom flowers. Last December I bought a bag at Whole Foods for $1. I used that bag over and over again each time I shopped for groceries. When it started to loose it’s shape I used it to hold and transport hundred’s of raffle tickets sold for a Valentine fundraiser for KittyKind. When we started to plant this past Spring, the bag became a depot for weeds and finally in mid-July I threw it out. Days later, back at the garden I saw the bag hanging from a low branch on a tree. Someone had taken it out of the garbage. I felt a little guilty so I took it back to our plot, hung it on the fence and used it once again for weeds. Today I decided it was time to say goodbye to this strong weathered bag. How fitting, it is the last day of Summer and I just purchased a new $1 bag from Whole Foods two days ago.
This morning we went to the garden to fill the water barrels, lucky for my husband they were full. The Sunflowers and Zinnias are still producing flowers. The Sunflowers have been coming in at all colors; bright yellow, pale yellow, dark red, and a yellow and red mix. When I looked down at the ground there were 5 mini Sunflowers that were so delicate looking, we brought them home. I also clipped some Lemon balm, Rosemary and Sage to add to my jars of dried herbs.
Last night on my way home from work I stopped off at the garden to pick two extra large cucumbers. There was one tomato and two jalapeno peppers as well and I cut some lemon balm, rosemary and sage to dry out. I cut four zinnias and one sunflower. There were other sunflowers but I was afraid to interrupt the evening tea the bees were taking part in. I showed my husband what I brought home and he called the tomato “Scar Face”. The garden overall looked half it’s size and the light was changing, Fall is on it’s way.
The garden tour and art show turned out to be a great success. The weather was perfect, a blue sky with fluffy clouds and a light breeze. People came from all over Brooklyn to view the art and stroll through the gardens. Thanks to all the Brooklyn blogs that posted our event. Below are a few pictures from the delightful day.
