September 30, 2008

Goethe-Institut and Galapagos Art Space Present
“What is Green Architecture?” Monday, October 6, 7:30pm, with Museum of Modern Art Achitecture and Design curator Andres Lepik—FREE

The Goethe-Institut New York presents “What Is Green Architecture?”, a new series of conversations, lectures, and events exploring the cutting-edge developments in the field and their impact on contemporary life as well as implications for the future.

In conversation with moderator Andres LepikSteffen Lehmann will discuss how “Green is the New Black” in terms of emerging urban design principles and strategies for energy-efficient cities beyond the individual building. He will also speak about Australia’s first zero-emission urban development, Taree Waterfront Masterplan.
“What Is Green Architecture?” series curator and moderator Dr. Andres Lepik is currently Curator in the Architecture & Design Department of The Museum of Modern Art. The theme of this presentation is to explore and assess emerging urban design principles and practical strategies for more energy-efficient cities, beyond the scale and scope of the individual building. The talk will reflect on sustainable design on the urban scale and critically examine new strategies for eco cities. This pairing is truly extraordinary as Galapagos Art Space is working towards becoming New York City’s first LEED certified “green” cultural venue.

Riding the Q, R and L Trains: Brooklyn-Manhattan

September 22, 2008

Yesterday I was riding the subway and I was thinking about Walker Evans, one of my favorite photographers, who happened to photograph people on the subway. It got me thinking about a teacher I had studied with for many years who gave me the best art education, David Passalacqua. My love of photography is coming back.

Brooklyn Blogade Meets Up in Williamsburg

September 22, 2008

Yesterday I attended my first Brooklyn Blogade event run by Chrissie B. It was all about personal branding, social media and audience-building. Those in attendance were Claude of the blog Self-Absorbed Boomer, Robin of the Clinton Hill Blog and Will of Cultural Capitol. We met at Juliette on N. 5th Street in Williamsburg and the margaritas were strong and delicious. Thanks Chrissie for your amazing seminar.

So Long Summer, So Long Whole Foods $1 Tote Bag

September 21, 2008

Today is the last day of Summer. We stopped by the garden as it has been a week since I have been there. The herbs are gorgeous, the Sunflowers are falling over into the Zinnias, the cucumber plants are dying and we are waiting for the Mums to bloom flowers. Last December I bought a bag at Whole Foods for $1. I used that bag over and over again each time I shopped for groceries. When it started to loose it’s shape I used it to hold and transport hundred’s of raffle tickets sold for a Valentine fundraiser for KittyKind. When we started to plant this past Spring, the bag became a depot for weeds and finally in mid-July I threw it out. Days later, back at the garden I saw the bag hanging from a low branch on a tree. Someone had taken it out of the garbage. I felt a little guilty so I took it back to our plot, hung it on the fence and used it once again for weeds. Today I decided it was time to say goodbye to this strong weathered bag. How fitting, it is the last day of Summer and I just purchased a new $1 bag from Whole Foods two days ago.

Flatbush CSA- Pick Up #12- Brooklyn, NY

September 18, 2008

The butternut squash is from last week or the week before. Honestly I wasn’t sure of what it was until my friend Jacque called me from the grocery store letting me know. Google image search confirmed it. Any suggestions on what to do with it besides photograph it and look at it daily. Now it has a friend, the pumpkin.
